Fuck likes, fuck favourites.

I don't want button clicks from strangers, I want conversations with my friends and acquaintances.

@yaaps heh. You're welcome to be one now though. I'm interested in your perspective.

The smart ass thing to do would've been to like the post instead of commenting

And clicking the star means "I read this," often enough that maybe it *should* be a read receipt and the destination for whatever the bookmark does be a little more, "I intend to give this attention soon" in semantics

Hot take, social media design

@yaaps oh, I'm so used to likes on posts that I wouldn't think twice about getting a like on that post.

And yes, the "I read this" functionality is useful, but it's mostly only relevant when people are mentioned or otherwise part of a narrow intended audience.

Once it becomes "broad audience" then likes turn into statistics and popularity score, which is bullshit if not harmful.

I'm glad we have a separate bookmark function now, I use that constantly!

Bookmark isn't conspicuous enough to gain mental traction for me, but I rather consistently use browser tabs instead of bookmarks on the web so I'm unlikely to ever establish the bookmark habit in social

Hot take, social media design

@yaaps I never really use bookmarks in my browser, but bookmarks in mastodon are extremely useful for "I want to check out this link later on a different device" and "I want to read this, but I don't have time right now", at least for me.

It needs to be more conspicuous for me to benefit. I have memory issues and navigate almost entirely by site and association. The bookmark control only shows when a post is clicked, which I only do for threads. It would be a sweet functionality for me, but I not only have the bookmarking facility hidden, but the access to the list is behind the hamburger menu. Out of sight, of mind. Two fingers 🖕 🖕 to modern UI design

Hot take, social media design

@yaaps ah yes, I see. The "obvious" solution is to replace the like button with the bookmark button 😜

And make the bookmarks as prominent in the default interface as, say, notifications.

@zatnosk
Yeah... something like

But I have Hamburger, Home, Local, Public, Settings, and Logout icons. Settings and Logout aren't collections. I'd look in the Hamburger menu every time if I needed them and didn't see them. Bookmarks, Favorites, and Lists... pick 2 to expose instead 😎
