Do you think of liberals as:

liberalism

Where exactly is it US liberalism diverges from european liberalism?

liberalism

@zatnosk the degree of it?

liberalism

@rune isn't that mostly a function of how much they can get away with?

@zatnosk

US liberals seem to me to fundamentally be property rights free market conservatives. In Europe liberal is more likely to be associated with social justice and egalitarianism, social democratic centrist viewpoints, with markets important but needing regulation to prevent abuses.

The problem I see is the loss of the distinction between who 'are' liberals and those who 'dress up' as liberals. Just like 'Democratic' gets used by authoritarians.

liberalism

@rochelimit @rune I don't know which european liberals you're describing, because the liberals around here (i.e. Denmark) are mostly about lower taxes, less state control, and corporate "efficiency".

liberalism

@zatnosk @rochelimit that's my experience too.

The liberal people I know are looking at US policy and agreeing. Except of course they're less racist 😂

liberalism

@rune
Yeah, I don't consider them to be actual liberals, but it seems everyone's usage of the word has diverged, so I expect we are all right to some extent.
