So, to be specific, compare the following two result sets, both in non-authenticated sessions:

https://social.coop/tags/beforemoderntimes

https://octodon.social/tags/beforemoderntimes

The second one shows all the posts that have been made (to my knowledge) with that hashtag. The social.coop one shows only those made by members of our instance. I follow everyone whose posts are shown in the octodon.social example and they follow me.

What's behind the difference?

@paregorios @zatnosk @Antanicus what's especially weird is that the hashtagged toot from the person on the Mastodon.at instance *does* show up on both timelines, so we are getting hashtags from there, but not octodon.social specifically, which is strange...

To make matters even more interesting, mastodon.at knows about ours and theirs, but not about octodon.social's (i.e., same behavior as ours):

So, maybe it's got something to do with what/how octodon.social shares.

Maybe @ekansa can find out who the admin(s) is/are there and chorus them into this discussion?

Can you put us in touch with an admin from octodon.social? I don't seem to be able to discover who that might be from the public-facing interfaces.

@kensanata @paregorios @zatnosk @Antanicus @mattcropp @ekansa oh that's a long thread. hashtags only matter when in a public post (and not unlisted), and it likely does too in search, so that's usually the thing to check. hashtags should index toots as soon as they're received by your instance otherwise

@mattcropp @paregorios @Antanicus hashtag timelines are instance wide, so any hashtagged post know by your instance is shown in your instance's hashtag timeline.
