Hey mastopeeps, fellow planeteer @vicorva is really really close to her Kickstarter goal for her librarians-and-necromancy fantasy BOOKS & BONE. It's be awesome if we could get her over the top by the time she gets up in the morning.

An alternative would be to just use two extra characters for 45 bit timestamps, and count milliseconds after unix epoch. That way it's not expected to change in lockstep with any human calendar.

But then it's just semi-unreadable garbage all of it :/

There might be a challenge regarding timezones and new years. It feels.. Wrong to force everyone to use UTC; most of the year it doesn't matter, but then suddenly your posts about breakfast in australia new years morning is marked as belonging to last year, because the british haven't entered the new year yet? If that isn't an artifact of imperialism, I don't know what is.

7 characters in base32 (35 bits) is enough to count the milliseconds in a year.

So I could theoretically make a timestamp that looks like:

That's pretty usable for autogenerated urls, don't you think?

(These fun facts brought to you by thinking about pleromas new flake id system and ideas seen on rustodon's issue tracker)

for all the shit people give Gargron, you do have to recognize that he was so moved by the abuses of proprietary social media services that instead of working for a tech company and becoming part of the problem, he did something about it.

yes. Gargron is not perfect. but, none of us are. there is no single person who is absolutely free of sin.

yes. there's a lot of things I disagree with him about, like the 300k user instance that is, and the way half of Mastodon's features are designed.

but that doesn't change the fact that he chose to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. and so, as part of my yearly review of what I'm sponsoring on Patreon I decided to give him some of those resources.

Fictional vs. actual cyberpunk dystopias: Cyberpunk predicted authoritarians would censor the truth, and hackers would be heroes for liberating data.

It didn't predict "swamp true information in a flood of lies, memes, and self-contradictory propaganda" would be easier than censorship and become the preferred authoritarian info-warfare tactic.

The limiting resource for truth-finding isn't data, it's *attention*.

Maybe the hero we need is less "hackers" and more "reputable journalists"

another thing i want to work on is creating an economic network inside the fediverse.

by this, i don’t mean something like bitcoin or some other method of value exchange, but instead solving a more fundamental problem.

the fediverse is largely comprised of people who have small businesses (like bespoke commissions, etsy stores, small companies, etc.), but we don’t have any way of discovering who can sell or provide what you’re looking for.

i want to try to find solutions to this problem — keeping $ flowing inside the fediverse, from participant to participant, helps indirectly to fund fediverse development: if there’s more $ flowing inside the fediverse, then there’s more opportunity for that $ to make it into the hands of the people building the network. also, keeping the $ inside the fediverse helps to more directly benefit fediverse participants in general. it’s a good situation for everyone.

keeping more of the $$$ inside the fediverse is a very early step toward building a self-reliant fediverse, which contributes to the eventual death of the nation-state.

I'm trying to achieve a lifelong dream of publishing a novel and I would really appreciate your help!

The family business is raising the dead; Ree has other ambitions. She’s going to resurrect the ancient magic of shapeshifting, but might doom her necromantic hometown in the process.

BOOKS & BONE is a librarians-and-necromancy fantasy with warmth and weirdness.

Thanks so much to everyone who has supported so far. 💙

I'd apologize for making this but I'd be blatantly lying.

Hashtag #Rust meme squad or something.

A profile picture that changes a small amount of pixels every day (by having a program generate and upload a new picture each day).
E.g. one that moved between two images by choosing a random row in the image and swapping a line with random length to pixels from the other picture, depending on what it currently is.

So, fun news! :D

One of my Planeteers, @vicorva, is currently running a kickstarter for her self-published book. The book is DONE! It just needs to be published!

It sounds like a positive book despite it's macabre aesthetic, which is a nice and underused combination imo. Happy goth?

The first chapter is here:

It's halfway funded, which is awesome!

Special cc to @brightneedle because I cannot read this book's premise without thinking of her.
